There are two great books on camper Van Interiors which you really should get if you’re interested in VW interiors or have an interior project to do.
VW Camper Inspirational Interiors
The first one is about inspirational VW Camper interiors - from the classic and subtle to kitsch and outregeous.
The Westfalia, 1965
This Westfalia keeps things subtle and original. It had been badly neglected and painted black but now, after restoration, it’s a vision of grey vinyl and grey Formica, with grey plaid for the curtains and, er, grey push-button cabinet handles. Think it sounds boring? There’s also a drop-down DVD, television and PlayStation2 with headphones.
Renaissance
Undeniably our favourite. Probably. Full marks to the author for finding such a gem. From a mere 1964 VW Camper panel van, a masterpiece has been created. “By day it’s a plush sitting room, by night a boudoir,” writes Mr Eccles, enticingly. Flocked velvet adorns the door panels while you’ll also find gilt-framed paintings, gold cherubims, a framed portrait of Madonna and child, a sculpture, sheepskin rugs and cushions with Indian elephants on them, of course. Discreetly hidden are a flat-screen television and a PlayStation.
The Devon Moonraker, 1982
Finished in Holographic Black, the exterior doesn’t give much away, although if you catch it in the right light, it glints red, blue and green. Inside, however, is an explosion of red and white, with a swivelling table made from a skimboard. There are spotlights, ambient LED strips, DVD screens and a black-and-white tile-effect floor. We love it.
The Panel Van, 1956
The owner named his VW “The Lounge” because the theory behind the redesign was “total indulgence with no compromise”. We’re talking an interior finished in oak and trimmed in tan Italian leather and Texan Longhorn cowhide. Read the rest of this entry »
